Reno Youth Bridge Winter Tournament

Reno Youth Bridge Winter Tournament

Saturday, December 16, 2017: Thirty-two Washoe County Bridge Club Members met today at the Reno Bridge Center to determine Winter Tourn 2nd placewho would win the Reno Dan Green Macharg trophyYouth Bridge Winter Intramural Championship Duprlicate Bridge Tournament.  Jefri Donovan, President of Reno Youth Bridge, Inc, a non-profit company sponsoring the learning and playing of the game in after school activity classes reported that this years event was the first of three intramural tournaments to be held in Reno-Sparks  venues during the school years of 2017-2018.  Reno Youth Bridge was founded in 2008 to introduce the game to students who wnated to enhance their academic studies and have fun playing contract Bridge, the oldest card game in the world.  A little known fact is that over the 9 years in which Reno Youth Bridge Instructors and Faculty Representatives at Middle school and High schools throughout the School System taught over 1500 students how to learn and play the game, those who took it seriously and made a sincere effort to become accomplished at this activity found their Grade Point average rise Winter Photo 15steadily as they became more accomplished at the game.  One student who began learning bridge in after school activity classes at Reno schools was one of the 1/2 of 1% of those taking the SAT and ACT College Preparation tests that got a perfect score in both SAT and ACT college preparation tests and he had his pick to enter almost any college in America.  He was asked what it was that he thought to be a critical factor in achieving such an amazing result.  After relating all the typical remarks about his teachers and family members encouraging him to work hard, he added that the inferential analysis he learned playing the game of bridge also had an important effect on his solving problems.  Someone in this group of students with mixed experience just might be the second Washoe County School System student who Aces the Colllege Boards.

Held this year in two sections reflecting experience, the overall winners were Sarah Macharg and Jamie Cohen with a match point score of 74.29%.  Second overall were Kathryn Heath and Gabe Reyes with a very respetable score of 60.21%. Following the tournament, the Students were provided with a light lunch during the award Ceremony.  Both Sarah and Jamie start off the year long competition with a big score in the Reno Youth Bridge Achievement Award Contest.  This year long competition concludes in June with the winner receiving a $1000 College Tuition Scholarship.  Readers may keep track of the points toward this award in the sidebar to this ond other pages of the Reno Youth Bridge Website.
